SEPTEMBER 4, 2008 -"Why does he need a new code of ethics? People didn't know that what they were doing was wrong? It's preposterous." So stated Herman Benson, founder of the Assn. for Union Democracy, one of the reform groups who are skeptical of Stern's plan to consult with them on reform of SEIU. Ken Paff of Teamsters for a Democratic Union, the other organization Stern claims he will consult, said, "How could they not know?" and "Hey, spending a lot of money at a fancy cigar place. How could you miss that?" both comments referring to SEIU's national leadership. Interestingly, the SEIU had not advised them that they would be recruited for a consulting role.
Benson and Paff said they believe Stern has tried to silence Rosselli, of an Oakland-based SEIU Local, in violation of democratic principles. "Stern is utilizing the corruption scandal to give himself cover for the action against Rosselli." said Benson.
