AUGUST 20,2008 - OpenSecrets.org reports that SEIU contributed $200,000 to an IRS Section 527 organization known as “Republicans Who Care” This committee is headed by David Rockefeller, former CEO of Chase Manhattan Corporation; John Whitehead, former senior partner at Goldman Sachs; and Sidney Weinberg, son of a legendary Goldman Sachs senior partner. Contributions to Section 527 organizations are exempt from the limits imposed on direct contributions to political parties and these committees are known as “independent-expenditure” organizations. The most famous 527 committee is the “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” who were so active during the 2004 presidential campaign.
