Ron Kaye Blasts City Council, Applauds Choi and Aquino
Thursday, Aug 06, 2009These quotes are from today’s Ron Kaye LA article titled "Days of Reckoning: Don't Forgive Them, They Know What They Are Doing". Adding that "Sally Choi put her job on the line Tuesday" and "City Council members who knew very well that their actions violate both civil and criminal law", Kaye summarized all the problems with the ERIP – problems for the unions, the City budget, and the citizens of Los Angeles. He summarizes the problems with this: "6.75 percent. But that is far from sufficient to cover the $250 million cost of the ERIP without sticking taxpayers". He notes that "(Council Member) Parks warned his fellow Council members they were treading into the danger zone by trying to pressure Choi and the LACERS board to violate their fiduciary duty to protect the pension fund's assets for the benefit of current and retired city workers."
Referring to EAA, Kaye says "Because the Engineers union, under attack from the SEIU and its allies like the mayor, can see that the ERIP will only make the city's financial crisis so much worse and threaten the future of its members, it has threatened to sue to block the deal." He concludes that "They (Council) knew all that was wrong with it from day one. But a funny thing happened on the way to making the city's financial position untenable. People like Sally Choi stood up to them. And Bob Aquino of the Engineers union."
