Governor and Secretary Gary Yamamoto

Gary Yamamoto is your Governor for the Technical Unit, MOU 21. He has served as a Senior Representative and on the Unit Council for MOU 21 and has been a voluntary dues-paying member of EAA since he began with the City in 1983. He also serves on the Union Stewards & Membership, Executive, and Constitution & By-Laws Committees of the Board. He is a land surveyor for the City, working out of the Piper Tech facility.
Gary actively recruits other EAA members to assist him in communicating with employees in the workplace. The unity and participation achieved in his working environment amply demonstrate how effectively the Union can work for its members.
Gary educates any EAA-represented employee on the benefits of the Union and the need to get involved. He accomplishes this by listening to and answering their questions as well as holding meetings with his co-workers to discuss Union issues. If members express a concern, Gary addresses it. If members request a lunch-time meeting, Gary will hold it.
Gary became quite familiar to members on the picket lines during the job actions of 2006. A picket captain himself, Gary led many members in their successes on the line. Gary is helping pursue parity with DWP through his service on the negotiating team.
Gary is dedicated to providing the best job security and benefits to all EAA members. His participation in debates over various issues helps to define and hone EAA’s positions.
As with many of the most active union workers, Gary has many outside pursuits, the most important being a family that recently grew through the birth of the Yamamoto’s fourth child. He is also active in his church and loves to work in fishing trips when he can.
Gary’s message to the members is to learn all you can about your union and unions in general. The more you know, the more you will appreciate EAA and the quality of our labor representatives. Through their own education, members can make the job of labor representative easier.
