EAA DELIVERS WIN FOR ELEVEN MEMBERS AT AIRPORT

Thursday, Jul 23, 2009

The original interviews for two positions of Airport Operations Superintendent I appeared to contain improprieties, and affected EAA members brought their concerns to Christopher, their representative. After investigation, he determined that there was sufficient evidence supporting the members’ concern of unfairness and he filed a complaint with the Human Relations (HR) office at the Department of Airports (DOA). In the complaint, he was representing all eleven affected members. He provided the necessary information for the DOA to initiate an investigation of possible EEO misconduct by an interview rater. LAWA HR refused to take appropriate action and he escalated the matter to the Los Angeles City Personnel Department. A full investigation demonstrated that the complaint had merit. As a result, there will be new interviews conducted and additional positions provided for Airport Operations Superintendent I, increasing the promotional opportunities for EAA members.

Once again, this emphasizes the need for quality representation by knowledgeable representatives. None of the eleven affected EAA members could have pursued this issue individually due to their concern of retaliation and due to not knowing how to move such an investigation to a higher level once rejected at the initial filing. Extensive effort and expertise by the labor representative was required to assemble conclusive evidence. This is the type of representation EAA provides, not only to EAA members, but to all EAA-represented City employees.
