SEPTEMBER 10, 2008 - AUD states “what the SEIU faces is a moral crisis involving both democracy and corruption.” Stern’s plan “would be more than a waste of time; it would be an evasion.” They instead propose an independent public review board to consider SEIU’s policies, practices, and charges of corruption. They believe SEIU should try a concept completely foreign to SEIU-the concept of DEMOCRACY!
EAA believes wholeheartedly in union democracy and, unlike SEIU, puts that belief into actual practice. EAA gives its members unbiased high-quality representation for all, including fair-share fee payers and dissenters. In addition, EAA grants full democratic rights of assembly, free speech, due process, secret ballot voting, right to nominate/run for office, and many other rights that are notoriously absent in any real sense for SEIU members.
The Association for Union Democracy is a pro-labor, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the principles and practices of democratic trade unionism. There is a wealth of information about unions at their website linked below. Included is a “Union Members’ Bill of Rights” which theoretically applies to SEIU, but has not generally been enforced. AUD’s presentation is based on the Federal Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act, which applies to private-sector and mixed private-public sector unions such as SEIU, but not to unions representing only public employees. Their information is quite instructive, however, as most of the rights closely parallel those granted by EAA.
EAA members are encouraged to visit the AUD website by clicking here. EAA believes that informed members are the best members and encourages visiting all the other websites referenced in our SEIU facts and links page.
