SEPTEMBER 4, 2008 - SEIU Local 721 will be expelled from the County Federation of Labor if they do not stop their raid on EAA by the end of this week, according to a letter sent to them today by Brother John J. Sweeney, President of the AFL-CIO. This would occur through revocation of their Solidarity Charter. A valid Charter is the only way a union that is not apart of the AFL-CIO can be a member of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. SEIU 721 would no longer be a part of the largest labor coalition in southern California and would be regarded as an outcast by those unions which partake in the many joint actions of the County Fed.
EAA Executive Director Bob Aquino met with officials of the County Federation today to discuss this issue. Sister Maria Elena Dorazo and the other members present at the meeting were very supportive and indicated their opposition to raiding in any form.
EAA compliments both Brother Sweeney and Sister Dorazo for their support and solidarity that is necessary to ensure the future of the labor movement in the United States. It is time for us all to get back to organizing the unrepresented.
