SEPTEMBER 17, 2008 - "It's a purely political move to silence our members." says Sal Rosselli, head of UHW, the second-largest CA Local in SEIU. The SEIU National is taking over UHW after doing the same to its largest CA Local reports the San Francisco Bay Guardian. Which SEIU Local is next? 721? Rosselli added "It's a kangaroo court", refering to the the charges being brought to an internal SEIU hearing. Interestingly, a federal judge recently dimissed the exact same charges in a court of law! So SEIU thinks it is a higher court than the United States courts.
This underscores the lack of democracy and lack of transparency in SEIU. Not only does SEIU appoint the leaders of their Locals, but they take over their locals to silence any voices demanding democracy or demanding that members be served by SEIU. They also take over the Locals when their appointed cronies prove to be corrupt and the corruption is revealed publicly. Of course, the corruption charges disclosed by the Los Angeles Times and others were made months earlier internally in SEIU and were simply swept under the rug.
According to the article, "the organization (SEIU) is preparing to deploy hundreds of its staffers to the region to take control of a local union affiliate". These are people who would have been working in the presidential campaign, but will instead be putting down SEIU members.
